Review: Light a Candle for the Beast

Very Few times Does a Short Story Capture and Hold My Attention…

But this one kept me up last night!

Light a Candle for the Beast by Echo Shea

This story starts in graveyard, and I have to admit, I thought to myself, “Geesh. How original.” My sarcasm was as unwarranted as my skepticism.

Light a Candle for the Beast was a breath of fresh air. The story unfolded slowly, like peeling back layers. Centuries of backstory seamlessly blended with what was happening ‘in the now.’ The prose was poetic and poignant, and I really felt the emotion, which is difficult to do in horror/dark fantasy. Especially in only 24 pages!

I am deducting 1/2 a star, purely because I don’t often recommend works this short, unless they’re 99¢ or less. But it is most certainly worth the $1.99 splurge, if you’re prepared for the length.

I know this seems silly, because as a writer I want to make as much money for other writers as I can. But as a reader, I can almost guarantee you I got this book on a free or 99¢ promo day, and I think it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

★☆ Easily 4.5 Stars! ★☆

☆ Since Amazon doesn’t work in 1/2 stars, you will see the book rated as 5 Stars there.
